Unless the ice is deemed thick enough (it wasn’t) and you spread out the weight (they didn’t).

I’ve been ice fishing. I’ve driven across frozen lakes (quickest way to get to the bar on the opposite side) in cars and snowmobiles (120mph+ whee!). I’ve gone to ice racing events. I’ve PARKED MY CAR ON ICE.

But that’s when its been measured and cleared by local authorities as safe to drive on. 14+ inches is a good measurement. 6-8 is what they’re saying Lake Geneva’s shore was, as it has been quite warm this past week.

Idiots.

A friend of mine got video of a brand new Sierra trying to be driven away by its owner (its vertical video and goes sideways, so I won’t scare you with it), to no avail. Only 5 cars were able to be driven off. The other 10 were too water damaged.

I’ve got ice racing up in Wisconsin a fair bit, although usually at least 2 hours north of where this happened. Apparently it was an ice sculpture event, and I’m guessing nobody checked the ice. They probably just saw a few vehicles in other spots on the lake for ice fishing and figured it was safe. They also probably didn’t consider that temps have been in the 40s a good portion of the week and that parking so close to the shore might mean thinner ice.

I usually visit Lake Geneva at least once a year. it blows my mind how that boat launch is always turned into a parking lot. Like, I can understand if it’s been a cold arse winter...but if it’s been mild? Cray cray.

My cousin lives really close to Lake Geneva... Nice area, but I couldn’t imagine the cold to freeze that lake, nor could I imagine parking on a lake where you can see water under the ice under your car.

I stayed at a place nearby and drove in. It was a nice little bed and breakfast. A tad more pricey that I would normally pay, but it was my wife and I’s anniversary.

It is just about an hour and a half drive from home though.

Wow. People just keeps getting more dumberer.

I seem to remember growing up that most gas stations and places that sell fishing licenses have signs/placards/postings of some sort saying whether the local lake ice is thick enough and how thick it needs to be for X (1" for a person, 4" for a snowmobile, etc.)

At the lake I ice-race on people will go out ice-fishing when the ice is so thin you can see the fish through it.

They also close ice-racing when the first car falls through.

I haven’t heard. I only head someone saw others parked on the ice and thought it was okay to. And that there was a sign to enter at own risk, or something like that.
